Melissa Mahmutovic (b. 1990) works and lives in the greater Oslo area in Norway. Her work is deeply concerned with our inner world and its intertwined state with the outer world.
Her practice includes painting, photography, illustration, and language-based art. Throughout her work, a recurring question arises: how can we see past the disconnection of our times and deepen the understanding of ourselves and the world around us?
Tapping into the subconscious layers of the mind, her inspiration comes from the present moment, intuitive reflections, and dreams.
Her dedication to painting while being fully immersed in the present moment comes from her perception that this allows access to a deeper way of experiencing reality. Mahmutovic's visual compositions bring up flows and bends of a landscape that rests in timeless space.
Mahmutovic was born in Germany and received a Master of fine Arts in Industrial Design at the Umeå Institue of Design in Sweden. She graduated her BFE with honours from the University of applied Sciences in Venlo, Netherlands. She worked and studied between The Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, France, USA and Norway. Her multinational experience carries an understanding but also a non-understanding, which allows her to approach this intercultural space with observative curiosity.
